Explosives

ExplosivesThe HAZARDOUS DEVICES SCHOOL located at the REDSTONE ARSENAL in Huntsville, Alabama is the nation’s only facility for training and certifying public safety bomb technicians to render safe hazardous devices thought to be explosives. Managed by the FBI, the explosives school has trained more than 20,000 state and local first responders since it’s opening in 1971.

Special Agent Bomb Technicians provide explosives training to state and local bomb squads and serve as the as the workforce behind the FBI’s explosives unit. In each field office, the FBI has at least one [1] Special Agent Bomb Technician who can test and render safe various devices containing explosives.  The agent is trained and certified as an FBI explosives expert.  Bomb technicians are responsible for responding to calls of suspicious packages or objects—explosives—and are deployed during bomb investigations, often working closely with members of the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Forces located throughout the nation, as well as the Justice Department’s ATF [Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms].

Additionally, in 2004, the FBI established the TERRORIST EXPLOSIVE DEVICE ANALYTICAL CENTER (TEDAC) to serve as the single inter-agency organization to receive, fully analyze, and exploit all terrorist improvised explosive devices (IEDs) of interest to the United States.  TEDAC coordinates the efforts of the entire government—from law enforcement to intelligence to military—to gather and share intelligence about these devices, helping to disarm and disrupt IEDs, link them to their makers, and, most importantly, prevent future attacks.1
